Meeting between Zelensky and Tikhanovskaya: Solidarity and Cooperation
In Vilnius, a significant meeting took place between the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the Belarusian opposition leader, Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya. Tikhanovskaya shared the news via social media.
«On behalf of the Belarusian people, I expressed our full solidarity with the Ukrainian nation fighting for its freedom and deep respect for President Zelensky's exceptional leadership», – Tikhanovskaya stated.
She informed that during the meeting, they discussed the Belarusians supporting Ukraine, including volunteers and activists, as well as the situation of Belarusian political prisoners who have been jailed for their solidarity. They also addressed the issue of Belarusian volunteers held captive and those living in Ukraine.
«I thanked President Zelensky and his team for accepting the latest group of freed Belarusian political prisoners», – Tikhanovskaya added.
According to the Belarusian opposition leader, they discussed further steps regarding the release of prisoners, sanctions, accountability for the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, and his associates, as well as a joint strategy with European, American, and other democratic partners.
She expressed gratitude to Zelensky for his «strong words» during the commemorative events for the participants of the January Uprising of 1863, for Ukraine's clear support for democratic Belarus, and for distinguishing between the Belarusian people and Lukashenko's regime.
Additionally, Tikhanovskaya expressed her wish to deepen cooperation with Ukraine, emphasizing the inseparable connection between the future of a free Ukraine and a free Belarus.
Earlier in January, Tikhanovskaya informed Lithuanian lawmakers of her decision to relocate to Poland.
