European Leaders Back Ukraine: New Security Guarantees
European leaders praised the efforts of US President Donald Trump aimed at achieving peace, emphasizing the importance of "solid security guarantees" for Ukraine.
This information was provided in a joint statement signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and President of the European Council Antonio Costa.
"This morning, President Trump and President Zelensky discussed the outcomes of Trump's meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska on August 15, 2025. The leaders expressed their support for Trump's efforts to halt violence in Ukraine and achieve a just peace," the statement said.
"We recognize that Ukraine requires solid security guarantees to effectively safeguard its sovereignty," the document highlights.
The leaders also welcomed President Trump's statement regarding the US readiness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
"A coalition of willing partners is prepared to actively support Ukraine. There should be no restrictions on Ukraine's Armed Forces or their cooperation with other nations. Russia cannot have a veto over Ukraine's path to the EU and NATO," European leaders asserted.
"International borders should not be changed by force," the joint statement emphasizes.
The leaders are also willing to collaborate with Trump and Zelensky on organizing a trilateral summit "with European support."
"Our support for Ukraine will continue. We are determined to do more to ensure Ukraine remains strong and to achieve a ceasefire and a just and lasting peace," the document states.
"As long as violence continues in Ukraine, we will be ready to maintain pressure on Russia. We will continue to enhance sanctions and broader economic measures to pressure Russia's war economy until a fair and lasting peace is established," the leaders declared.
The leaders emphasized that Ukraine can count on unwavering European solidarity in pursuing peace that will safeguard vital security interests for both Ukraine and Europe.
As reported by Ukrinform, President Trump held talks with Russian leader Putin at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House special representative Steve Witkoff were also present at the talks.
After the negotiations, Trump stated in an interview with Fox News that during talks with Putin in Alaska, they agreed that the war in Ukraine could end with "territorial exchanges" and certain security guarantees from the US. The US President also noted that reaching an agreement to end the war allegedly depends on President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Trump also had a phone conversation with President Zelensky after the discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which included Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders.
