New Security Prospects for Ukraine
Speaking at a press conference in the White House on August 18, a representative of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the US initiative on security guarantees for Ukraine is a "significant step forward", although details still need to be discussed.

According to his remarks, the negotiations that took place on Monday were a "crucial step towards sustainable peace", and Ukraine needs to have "reliable" security guarantees.
"It is evident that the details will require discussion, but you can see how seriously the "coalition of the resolute" has prepared for the deployment of security assurance forces after the end of hostilities, as well as for supporting the protection of Ukraine's air and sea space along with restoring its armed forces. We will certainly continue these discussions with the United States," the spokesperson noted.
When asked about the possibility of trading occupied territories for peace, the spokesperson clarified that the issue of Ukraine's borders is a matter for its own negotiations, and changing international borders by force is unacceptable.
He also emphasized that the UK’s stance on Ukraine’s NATO membership has not changed despite Donald Trump's remarks that Kyiv should not be admitted to the Alliance.
The spokesperson for Starmer further highlighted that "Russia cannot have a veto over Ukraine's path to the EU or NATO".
Prior to this, officials from the Trump administration – Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff – stated that at a meeting in Alaska on August 15, Putin acknowledged for the first time that the US and European allies could provide security guarantees to Ukraine to prevent further Russian aggression. One of President Donald Trump’s advisors suggested that the United States might deploy its troops in Ukraine as part of potential security guarantees after the end of hostilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned on Sunday that he has no detailed information about the security guarantees for Ukraine discussed between Trump and Putin in Alaska, but he noted the "important signal" from the US president.
