Ukraine Gains New Position in the UN
On July 4, Ukraine was elected to the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) during a conference in Rome.
This was announced by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha on social media.
«Another significant achievement for Ukraine within the UN system. This morning in Rome, Ukraine was elected to the FAO Council,» Sybiha wrote.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy thanked the UN member states for recognizing Ukraine's vital role as a guarantor of global food security and assured that efforts would continue to promote these goals.
«Despite the challenges posed by Russia’s full-scale aggression, we will keep expanding our humanitarian efforts that save lives, including through President Zelensky's initiative «Grain from Ukraine»», the minister noted.
He also pointed out that Russia and Belarus failed to gain a seat on the Council, «despite their efforts».
«Moscow must remain in international isolation. Aggressors have no place in the governing bodies of international organizations», the Foreign Minister emphasized.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, at the IV International Conference on Financing for Development, urged present states and organizations to support Ukraine's efforts and work together to address the food crisis caused by Russian aggression.
The FAO Council is one of the main bodies of this organization, responsible for food and agriculture issues globally. It consists of 49 member countries elected by the FAO conference. The Council performs certain functions delegated to it by the conference and appoints officials, except for the chair.
