Collaboration between Ukraine and Sweden in Space Technologies
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has held talks with a Swedish delegation regarding collaboration in space technologies for military purposes.
The meeting focused on enhancing Ukraine's capabilities with the support of international partners.
During the presentation, the Ukrainian side showcased its achievements, including plans to establish a Space Policy Office by March 2025, and outlined the key needs of the defense forces.
According to the head of the office, Oleksandr Havrutenko, Ukraine is ready to share its unique combat experience while focusing on processing large datasets received from partners instead of expanding its own equipment.
Deputy Minister of Defense Kateryna Chernogorenko emphasized the priority of this area, noting that satellites provide military personnel with reliable communication, intelligence data, and early warning systems, which is crucial for saving lives.
The head of the Swedish delegation, Brigadier General Lars Helmerich, confirmed Sweden's interest in cooperation, especially considering Ukraine's combat experience.
He added that Sweden could help facilitate Ukraine's interactions with other partners, particularly Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Iceland).
Ukraine and Sweden also discussed the modernization of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' aviation fleet.
In May, key topics included the modernization of the existing Soviet aircraft fleet using modern avionics and the potential transfer of Swedish aircraft to Ukraine.
European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius stated during his visit to Sweden that the Scandinavian country must take the lead in building Europe's defense capabilities.
In December, it became known that the European Union is discussing the creation of a joint defense fund worth 500 billion euros to increase defense spending ahead of the return to power of newly elected US President Donald Trump.
This funding model, which will also be available to non-EU member states, is gaining traction among key EU countries.
Earlier, Ukraine and Sweden had talks regarding strengthening the aviation capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
