New Phase in Diplomacy: US Steps Back from Mediation
The US State Department believes it is time for direct talks between Ukraine and Russia to end the conflict, and the United States will no longer act as an active mediator in this process.
This was stated by State Department spokesperson Tammi Bruce during a briefing.
State Department Statement: Time for Direct Negotiations
“We will not be mediators. We will not be rushing to the other side of the world to facilitate meetings,” she said, explaining Washington's shift in approach. “The work now needs to be done between the two parties.”
The spokesperson noted that the United States will still strive for peace. However, she stated that the resolution of the conflict now requires “specific ideas” from both Moscow and Kyiv.
US Advocates Territorial Compromises
US Vice President Jay D. Vance has stated that Washington anticipates that Ukraine and Russia will need to make territorial concessions for peace to be achieved.
A meeting in London of the foreign ministers of the UK, France, Germany, and Ukraine to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine was postponed following the cancellation of Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit.
Instead, discussions will take place at the official level among the five countries (likely Ukraine, the UK, France, Germany, and the US).
Once the cancellation of Rubio's visit was reported, Paris and Berlin also suspended their foreign ministers' travel plans.
