Suspension of Satellite Imagery Access: New Challenges for Ukraine

The Trump administration has decided to suspend Ukraine's access to commercial satellite imagery acquired by the US government through Maxar.

Details: Ukraine has been actively using Maxar's satellite imagery to monitor the movements of Russian troops, assess the terrain, and assist in military planning.

The suspension of access to the images obtained through Maxar follows the Trump administration's decision to limit intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

"Maxar has contracts with the US government and several allied countries for providing satellite imagery and geospatial data. Each client independently decides how to utilize and share this data", – said a Maxar representative.

"We take our contractual obligations very seriously. We are not making any changes to how we support our other clients and their programs", – the company added.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency stated that it has temporarily suspended access to the commercial satellite imagery system acquired by the United States, in accordance with the presidential administration's directive regarding support for Ukraine.

On Friday, CNN reported that the US continues to share intelligence data with Ukraine that could help its forces protect themselves but has "reduced" the intelligence exchanged that the Armed Forces of Ukraine could use for attacks on Russian invaders.

Commenting on the halt of aid to Ukraine, President Donald Trump stated that he "wants to stop the deaths".
