Drone Strike on a News Crew in Ukraine
In mid-October, a team from the German publication Welt suffered an attack from a Russian drone known as "Lancet" while filming in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The attack resulted in the death of one Ukrainian soldier, as reported by the publication.
The crew was preparing a report with a mobile unit of the Ukrainian air defense in an open field when the "Lancet" struck a military vehicle that was escorting the reporters. Operator Viktor Lysenko captured the moment of the strike and the aftermath on video.
The strike occurred on October 13 at around 21:35 local time, approximately 25-30 kilometers from the front line. At the time of the explosion, the team was just a few meters away from a military crew of three.
As a result of the attack, a 48-year-old Ukrainian air defense soldier was killed. Another soldier was severely injured and had to have his leg amputated.
Welt's producer Ivan sustained injuries to both legs from metal shrapnel. He required urgent medical assistance and underwent surgery in the hospital.
Welt's chief reporter Ibrahim Naber and operator Viktor Lysenko received minor injuries, while all media team members were marked as press representatives during filming.
