Ukraine and NATO Launch Joint Defense Innovation Program
Ukraine and NATO have announced the launch of a joint initiative called UNITE – Brave NATO aimed at accelerating the implementation of defense innovations. This was stated by First Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The first pilot competition is set to begin in 2026 with a total budget of €10 million. In Ukraine, the program will be coordinated by Brave1, while NATO will implement the first competition through the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA). Funding will be provided under the Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine (CAP) and from the resources of the Ministry of Digital Transformation.
The project will focus on developing new innovative solutions for the following tasks:
- countering drones;
- enhancing air defense;
- ensuring reliable communication and navigation systems on the front lines.
"This initiative will provide the Alliance with invaluable real-time experience, while Ukraine will benefit from a faster development of defense technologies," the statement emphasizes.
The expected start date for application submissions is February 2026, with winners to be announced in the spring of 2026. Details of the competition will be disclosed at the beginning of the year. Plans are also in place to increase the program's joint funding to €50 million.
Previously, it was reported that Ukraine would become a full-fledged element of the new EU defense architecture. This was stated by European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius, indicating that this means not just participation in our mechanisms, but real involvement in the formation of new joint productions and technologies that will serve as the foundation for Europe’s future security.
