New Rails for Ukrainian Railways
Ukrzaliznytsia has signed an agreement with the Austrian company Voestalpine Rail Technology GmbH for the supply of 10,000 tons of rails, sufficient for the repair of 80 km of railway track. This was reported by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development.
The agreement ensures a steady supply of rails for capital repairs of an additional 80 km of track,” the ministry stated.
“This was made possible due to successful competitive tenders that helped reduce the expected price, allowing for significant savings. These funds were redirected to contract an additional batch,” the statement reads.
The procurement is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) within the framework of the “Emergency Support for Ukrainian Railways” project.
With this agreement, the total contracted supply volume will reach about 46,000 tons, enabling the construction and repair of 358 km of railway tracks, the agency informs.
The new rails are expected to start arriving after the completion of the main supplies – approximately from May 2026.
“The additional rails will enable the completion of capital repairs, increase train speeds, and enhance network capacity – crucial for the stability of freight transport and the development of infrastructure,” the statement concludes.
