Launch of the New Coin "Archangel Michael"
The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the release of a new silver coin titled "Archangel Michael" as part of the "Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine" series. This was reported by the bank's press service on their Facebook page.
The coin was presented at the National Museum of Andrey Sheptytsky in Lviv as part of the cultural project "Archangel Michael". This release honors Archangel Michael, one of the most revered heavenly guardians of the Ukrainian people.
"We are thrilled to be part of this wonderful project, as the coin's issuance coincides with the 120th anniversary of the museum's establishment and the 160th anniversary of the birth of Andrey Sheptytsky, a spiritual leader of the Ukrainian nation. We hope this new coin serves as a symbol of spiritual strength and faith in victory during challenging times," commented Yevhen Kondratenko, head of the numismatic products and cash operations department of the NBU.
The design of the new coin is based on the image of Archangel Michael from the Žovkva iconostasis created by the prominent Ukrainian artist Ivan Rutkovych in the late 17th century.
The obverse features the royal gates of the Žovkva iconostasis with a prayer to Archangel Michael. Above the gates is a stylized arch representing the light that conquers darkness. The inscription at the top reads: "Who is like God" – a traditional address to the archangel.
The reverse showcases the image of Archangel Michael from the Žovkva icon, created using selective gilding and color printing. The archangel is depicted in armor, holding a sword and scales among the clouds, with a background decorated with a floral ornament in the baroque style.
The coin has a nominal value of 10 UAH. It will be available for purchase starting November 11 on the NBU's numismatic products online store and through authorized banks.
