Ukraine and Sweden's Agreement on Fighter Jet Production
Ukraine and Sweden have reached a significant agreement to begin the production of Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets in Ukraine starting from 2033. This announcement was made by Ukraine's Minister of Defense, Denys Shmyhal, during a recent briefing.
On November 6, a memorandum was signed between an unnamed Ukrainian company and the Swedish firm Saab, focusing on the localization of Gripen E/F aircraft production. According to Shmyhal, Ukraine plans to undertake major assembly and production of certain parts starting in 2033.
Furthermore, the minister noted that following negotiations between the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Sweden, agreements were reached with the Swedish Ministry of Defense on November 6, confirming the supply of 150 Gripen E/F units to Ukraine.
He also emphasized that Ukraine aims to acquire the previous C/D class Gripens by 2026.
The main differences between the Gripen E/F and C/D fighters are that the E/F version represents a significant upgrade, turning the aircraft into a 4.5 generation fighter. The new variants are equipped with a much more powerful engine, which allows for increased thrust and payload capacity of up to 7.2 tons, compared to 5.3 tons in the C/D models. Additionally, the new versions feature an advanced radar with an active electronically scanned array (AESA), providing better detection and resistance to electronic warfare. Moreover, the Gripen E/F has significantly increased internal fuel capacity for extended flight range.
The parties also discussed the potential start of training for Ukrainian pilots and mechanics beginning in 2026, ensuring that personnel preparation aligns with the delivery of the first aircraft.
Agreements were reached to establish two working groups: a technical group for preparing the aircraft for operation in Ukraine and a financial group to discuss contract conditions. Shmyhal stressed that this agreement will be the largest in Europe, thus requiring careful preparation.
Previously, Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson stated that Sweden plans to initially transfer reconnaissance aircraft to Ukraine and later consider the transfer of Gripen jets.
