Temporary Ban on Timber Exports: New Regulations in Ukraine
The Ukrainian government has implemented new measures prohibiting the export of unprocessed timber. This decision, initiated by the business sector, aims to stabilize the domestic market, meet the needs of the military and the population during winter, and reduce environmental pressures. This was reported by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
Svyrydenko emphasized that this decision is driven by the critical situation amid the ongoing war:
- Timber is a vital resource for heating during winter, especially in rural areas. This ban is necessary to protect people.
- The volume of timber harvesting in Ukraine has significantly decreased. Many businesses that could operate are either idle or functioning at minimal capacities due to a lack of raw materials. The ban will help preserve jobs.
- The Armed Forces of Ukraine require timber for their needs at the front.
- The war has caused significant damage to the environment, with parts of forests occupied or damaged. Exporting would only exacerbate environmental issues.
The government’s decision includes licensing for exports with a zero quota until the end of the year. Authorities continue to work on further steps to address the timber shortage in the country.
It is also worth noting that a social assistance program remains active in Ukraine.
Families that use solid fuel (firewood, coal, briquettes) for heating and lack access to centralized heating or gas can receive housing subsidies or benefits for purchasing it.
Benefits are provided without considering income, especially for combat veterans, individuals with war-related disabilities, and families of fallen defenders of Ukraine.
