Switching to Winter Time in Ukraine: Updates and Changes
26 October 2025 10:17
On the night of Sunday, October 26, Ukrainians adjusted their clocks back by one hour at 4:00 AM, marking the switch to winter time. This effectively extended the day by an hour.
The practice of summer and winter time was first introduced in the UK in 1908 to save electricity.
In Ukraine, the clock change to winter and summer time has been observed on the last Sunday of October and March, respectively, for decades.
This procedure is governed by a resolution from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated May 13, 1996, No. 509, regarding the time calculation order in Ukraine.
On July 16, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada passed the time calculation law (bill No. 4201) that abolishes the transition between summer and winter time. According to this document, a single Kyiv time – UTC+2 is to be established. Therefore, in 2024, Ukrainians will adjust their clocks for the last time to winter time, and starting from 2025, there will be no transition to summer time. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky has yet to sign this law.
