Celebrating the Ukrainian Language: New Traditions and Changes
27 October 2025 09:51
In Ukraine, October 27 is celebrated as Ukrainian Language and Writing Day.
This date was established on November 6, 1997, when President Leonid Kuchma signed a decree supporting public initiatives.
Until 2023, the celebration took place on November 9 in honor of St. Nestor the Chronicler according to the Julian calendar. In 2023, after transitioning to a new church calendar, the dates of fixed holidays were shifted by 13 days, moving the Language Day to October 27.
Every year, events are organized in Ukraine to promote the Ukrainian language. Traditionally, the National Unity Dictation is held, and this year, the author will be writer Yevheniya Kuznetsova, with actress Natalia Sumska reading the text.
Last year, over half a million people participated in the National Unity Dictation on Public platforms, with around 10,000 letters submitted for verification from over 30 countries.
