New Ukrainian-British Drone for Airspace Defense
During an official visit to the UK, President Volodymyr Zelensky introduced the new interceptor drone OCTOPUS, which was created through collaborative efforts of Ukrainian and British engineers.
According to the President's Office, the UK will begin producing these drones for testing in Ukraine. If the tests are successful, production is set to expand both in the UK and at Ukrainian enterprises. Bloomberg reports that the UK plans to manufacture around 2,000 units of OCTOPUS each month for supply to Ukraine.
The OCTOPUS drone is the result of a joint defense initiative developed by Ukrainian engineers, including the company Ukrspecsystems, with active support from British scientists and technical experts. Its primary purpose is to counter enemy strike drones, especially the Russian Shahed-136.
A key advantage of the OCTOPUS is its cost-effectiveness: estimates indicate that its price is less than 10% of the cost of the targets it can destroy, making it a financially viable alternative to expensive surface-to-air missiles.
The UK Ministry of Defense is also considering the OCTOPUS as a future foundation for a European "drone wall" — a permanent air defense system along NATO's eastern flank designed to counter Russian UAVs.
The OCTOPUS project marks the first joint defense initiative under the new agreement between Ukraine and the UK on military technology exchange, with plans for joint production of glide bombs in the future.
