Electricity Supply Challenges in Ukraine: A Look Ahead
06 March 2025 18:43
The electricity supply situation in Ukraine may worsen despite the sudden warmth.
This was stated by Yuriy Boyko, a member of the supervisory board of NEK "Ukrenergo", in an interview with Business Capital.
Currently, the population in Ukraine is rarely disconnected from electricity, with restrictions mainly affecting businesses and industries.
"The situation may change in March-April. Planned repairs will begin at our nuclear power plants after winter. The shutdown of a 1000 MW unit is significant for our energy system in its current state. I am not sure we can easily replace the absence of such a power unit, especially if there are several. This year's hydro resources are considerably lower due to the mild and snowless winter," said Boyko.
Boyko believes that strict energy conservation will be necessary to avoid outages.
Moreover, he thinks it is essential to increase electricity imports.
Reminder:
NEK "Ukrenergo" urges businesses to connect backup generating units installed at their facilities to the general energy system.
