SBU Prevents Assassination of Ukrainian Officer
The counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine successfully thwarted an assassination attempt on an officer of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense.
Following a complex special operation in Kyiv, an FSB agent was discovered trying to eliminate a Ukrainian soldier in a central area of the city.
The assailant was caught «in the act» while drawing a pistol and aiming at the military officer in a local establishment.
Investigations revealed that the murder attempt was carried out by a 28-year-old citizen of a Central Asian country, who had been recruited by the enemy while seeking easy jobs in Telegram channels.
Acting on instructions from Russian handlers, the agent arrived in Ukraine posing as a tourist and initially stayed in Pervomaisk in the Mykolaiv region.
There, he purchased several smartphones and SIM cards, which he regularly changed for covert communications with the FSB.
Later, the foreigner moved to Kyiv, receiving photos of the potential «target», approximate geolocations, and the coordinates of a cache, from which he retrieved a pistol with ammunition.
For carrying out the assassination, he was promised $50,000 and legalization in one of the EU countries.
At the scene of the assassination attempt on the Ukrainian intelligence officer, law enforcement seized weapons with ammunition and a smartphone containing evidence of his communications with the FSB.
Investigators from the Security Service have charged the agent with several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 2 of Art. 15, Part 2 of Art. 115 (completed attempt of deliberate murder);
- Part 1 of Art. 111-2 (aiding the aggressor state);
- Part 1 of Art. 263 (illegal handling of weapons).
The criminal is currently in custody, facing life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
The special operation was conducted by employees of the Counterintelligence Department and the SBU Office in the Mykolaiv region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
