Renaming a Street in Kyiv in Honor of Hetman Mazepa
In the Pechersk district of Kyiv, part of Lavrska Street, from Slava Square to Dobrovolchy Batallions Street, has been renamed after Hetman Ivan Mazepa. The other segment, from Dobrovolchy Batallions to Navodnytska Square, has returned to its historical name – Novonavodnytska Street. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration.
The decision was made during a plenary session of the V session of the Kyiv City Council, where 72 deputies participated.
According to the initiator of the renaming, City Council member Olesya Pynzenyk, residents of Kyiv have advocated for the name change since 2022, supporting an electronic petition.
Later, the initiative was discussed and supported during public consultations.
The change was also backed by the National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" and the National Museum of Holodomor-Genocide.
"Ivan Mazepa is one of the most significant political figures in Ukrainian history and a patron who greatly contributed to the development of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. His name should be immortalized on the street where the churches restored with his funding stand. The change of the street name in 2010 at the request of the Moscow Patriarchate was a humiliation of Ukrainian history and a direct influence of the enemy on our local governance," emphasized Pynzenyk.
"Today we are returning to the people of Kyiv their right to their own memory. I am grateful to everyone who fought for this decision and urge you to actively participate in shaping the cultural environment of our city," she concluded.
