New Burial Sector for Fallen Soldiers in Lviv
Lviv has commenced the establishment of a new burial sector for fallen soldiers, which will be located at Honorary Burial Field No. 87 on Pasichna Street. The existing burial field at Lychakiv Cemetery has only 20 available spots left. This information was confirmed by the Lviv City Council.
Previously, this area was known as the Hill of Glory, where Russian and Soviet soldiers who died during World War I and II were buried.
Now, this section will become the new Honorary Burial Field No. 87, situated within the Lychakiv Cemetery and easily accessible from the current burial site on Mechnikova Street.
"We have worked hard to give this area a new purpose. The war continues, and our task is to ensure a dignified burial for every defender," — noted Yevhen Boyko, head of the executive committee of the Lviv City Council.
The chief architect of Lviv, Anton Kolomeitsev, explained that the new burial area has a unique topographical resource: it is the only flat area nearby suitable for such a sector.
Additionally, the city is working on the creation of a future citywide military memorial cemetery that will meet international standards for honoring military personnel.
"Such cemeteries operate worldwide even after conflicts end. They honor not only those who died in combat but also all veterans who passed away peacefully, which is a norm in countries that honor their defenders and preserve their memory for future generations," – stated the city council.
