Enhancing Energy Independence for Educational Institutions in Kyiv
The Belgian development agency Enabel is acquiring 35 generators with a total capacity of 4,000 kW for educational institutions in the capital as part of its support for Ukraine. This was announced by Valentyn Mondryiivskyi, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA).
«In Kyiv, we are actively working to enhance the energy independence of critical infrastructure and socially important institutions. We are currently signing necessary contracts and processing documents. We are doing everything possible to ensure smooth operations for schools and kindergartens under comfortable conditions,» he stated.
According to the deputy, 35 educational institutions in Kyiv will receive the generators, including 25 schools, 9 kindergartens, and 1 vocational education institution. The total capacity of the equipment will be nearly 4,000 kW, allowing for full operation during power outages. The education departments of district state administrations have identified the institutions that will receive the equipment as a priority.
This assistance is part of a large-scale initiative by Enabel aimed at restoring critical and social infrastructure in Ukraine.
According to the Department of Education and Science of KCSA, as of the beginning of the academic year, there are 683 educational institutions in the city with generators totaling 6,274 kW, including 373 schools with a capacity of 4,013 kW, 285 kindergartens with a capacity of 1,630 kW, and 26 other institutions with a capacity of 667 kW. These volumes are insufficient for proper functioning.
To ensure a quality educational process amid war and energy challenges, the city authorities are working on a comprehensive energy independence program for each institution. The program plans to procure generators of necessary capacities, energy storage systems, and install solar power plants depending on the needs of schools and kindergartens. Implementation of the program is set to begin in 2025.
