Corruption Scandal in Odessa Defense Sector
A resident of Odessa has been detained for trying to bribe an engineer from a defense enterprise. Investigators have informed him of the charges.
Together with the Security Service of Ukraine, the police in Odessa region arrested a man who was attempting to corrupt an employee of a defense factory.
The suspect, a 37-year-old local resident, offered 40,000 hryvnias for documents belonging to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. He sought to obtain copies of research and design works on military aviation product modernization.
The engineer reported the bribe offer to the management of the enterprise, which then contacted the law enforcement authorities. Police apprehended the man during a meeting with the engineer when he was handing over part of the bribe amounting to 20,000 hryvnias.
During the investigation, authorities seized the money, mobile phones, documentation, and other evidence of the criminal activity.
Based on the collected evidence, investigators charged the suspect under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for offering an unlawful benefit to a public official for actions performed using their official position, committed by a group of individuals in conspiracy.
The sanctions of this article provide for a penalty of imprisonment for up to eight years, with or without property confiscation.
The court has chosen a preventive measure of detention for the suspect.
Law enforcement continues to identify all individuals involved in the crime.
