EU Membership: A Path to Security for Ukraine and Europe
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that joining the European Union is a crucial step for ensuring security for Ukraine and European nations. He expressed this view during a press conference on January 29, 2026.
"We have a shared understanding that the EU is an important security guarantee not only for Ukraine but for the entire European continent. It ensures our long-term security. Issues of economic safety and shared technologies are also vital for our future," the president remarked.
Zelensky emphasized that while Ukraine plans to develop trade with the Middle East and other regions, the EU remains its primary trading partner.
"This is our choice based on shared values and geopolitical interests. Security in the EU is critical, and we must work on this. Thank God there has been no war in Europe, which speaks to the stability of this union," he added.
Regarding the potential date of accession, Zelensky noted that "Ukraine's technical readiness for EU membership is expected in 2027."
"By the end of 2026, we will be prepared across all sectors. This will require certain reforms and discussions, as it is a lengthy process...", he emphasized.
The president also pointed out that Russia will attempt to hinder Ukraine's integration into the EU, as it seeks to maintain control over our market and potential.
"Moscow does not want us to become part of the European community. It is interested in ensuring that Ukraine remains outside NATO and the EU. Therefore, we must prioritize this with all our efforts," Zelensky explained.
Regarding NATO, the president mentioned that he does not want to repeat past failures in joining the Alliance, as the situation may be complicated by external pressures.
"I don’t want to be the president who talks about NATO while Ukraine fails to join due to external factors. However, with the EU, we have real opportunities," he stressed.
Zelensky also expressed hope that after joining the EU, the active rebuilding of Ukraine will commence.
"Reconstruction will begin immediately, and although it will take many years, it is important to attract investors to our country, which will become part of the EU," he added.
The information about the potential date of Ukraine's EU membership in 2027 emerged against the backdrop of negotiations with the USA regarding a peace agreement and security guarantees. However, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz dismissed the possibility of Ukraine joining the EU by that date.
