Strengthening Defense Ties Between Ukraine and France
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron have signed a significant agreement concerning the acquisition of defense equipment for Ukraine. A video of the signing ceremony, featuring Rafale jets, was released on the official website of the Ukrainian president.
Zelensky announced that the agreement aims to bolster Ukraine's combat aviation and airspace protection.
French media received information regarding the types of weaponry that will be included in this "historic agreement" with Ukraine.
The countries are expected to establish a 10-year strategic agreement in the aviation sector, which will entail the supply of multi-role Rafale combat aircraft to Ukraine.
Moreover, agreements may be reached for the supply of additional SAMP/T air defense systems, along with missiles and counter-drone systems.
Recently, the French president's press service indicated that Macron intends to discuss security guarantees with Zelensky in case of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Additionally, Macron plans to confirm France's commitment to supporting Ukraine, as stated by the Élysée Palace.
It is also anticipated that both presidents will jointly visit the General Staff of the "multinational Ukrainian forces," which currently exists only on paper.
Previously, France and the United Kingdom advocated for sending foreign contingents to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
Zelensky noted that during his visit, the signing of a "historic agreement" with France regarding the enhancement of combat aviation, air defense, and defense capabilities is planned. France, along with the UK and Germany, is a leading force in the so-called "coalition of the willing," which includes around 30 mostly European countries coordinating support for Ukraine.
