New Energy Alliances: Ukraine and Greece Sign Gas Deal
Recently, Ukraine and Greece signed a crucial agreement regarding the supply of natural gas, paving the way for energy independence from Russian sources. This was announced by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"Today, a new important aspect of cooperation is emerging between our nations. This is a new secure energy route from south to north, connecting Greece to Ukraine. This has been made possible through the establishment of a vertical energy corridor linking Alexandroupolis with Odesa," he stated.
Mitsotakis emphasized that this agreement provides Ukraine with access to reliable energy sources, while Greece becomes a key hub for delivering American liquefied gas to Central and Eastern Europe.
"This declaration of intent and the gas sale agreement reflect our intention to implement a project that will enhance Ukraine's energy stability. This is facilitated by American gas. Undoubtedly, these are pivotal steps towards independence from Russian gas," Mitsotakis highlighted.
Gas supplies from Greece to Ukraine are set to begin in January 2026, according to President Zelensky. He stressed that gas imports are essential to compensate for the losses incurred due to Russian aggression on Ukrainian production. The agreement with Greece is part of a larger energy package being prepared for the winter.
