G7 Ministers Affirm Support for Ukraine's Energy Security
Energy ministers from the G7 nations condemned the recent Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and confirmed their willingness to assist in the restoration of the energy system. This was stated in a release from the Canadian presidency of the G7.
The document emphasizes that Russia's war against Ukraine severely impacts the country's energy security and poses a threat to civilians. The G7 reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity, freedom, sovereignty, and independence.
“We stand united in our support for Ukraine and its people, who have shown courage and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges,” the statement reads.
The ministers condemned the recent Russian strikes on gas infrastructure, which have created risks for civilian lives and weakened energy security.
They specifically acknowledged the bravery of Ukrainian energy workers who continue to restore electricity and heating for communities despite the dangers.
The G7 declared that it would work to meet Ukraine's energy needs for both its economy and citizens, including:
- coordinating assistance through the G7+ Ukraine Coordination Group and the Ukraine Energy Support Fund;
- supporting the protection of energy infrastructure;
- collaborating with the IAEA to ensure nuclear safety;
- promoting the diversification of energy supply chains;
- supporting the development of a decentralized and resilient energy system in Ukraine.
The G7 also emphasized that rebuilding Ukraine is a “huge but critically important task” that requires engagement from both the public and private sectors. The ministers believe that Ukraine can serve as a model for energy security and innovation in the region.
To this end, the G7 will continue to provide financial assistance, credit lines, risk insurance, and support for private investments, particularly through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Ukraine Donor Platform.
Additionally, the G7 reminded about sanctions against Russia aimed at limiting its energy revenue and pledged to intensify efforts against the shadow tanker fleet that helps Moscow circumvent restrictions.
“We acknowledge that Ukraine has the potential to become a model for creating a modern, resilient, and decentralized energy system,” the ministers stated in a joint declaration.
In conclusion, the G7 welcomed the adoption of the Statement on Ukraine's Energy Security, which was signed by Australia and Ukraine.
