Germany threatens Russia with sanctions if ceasefire is rejected today
Russia must consider the proposal for a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine by the end of Monday, May 12. Otherwise, it may face new sanctions from Western nations.
This was stated by German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius, as reported by The Guardian.
Deadline for Russia: peace or new restrictions
Cornelius warned that “time is running out,” emphasizing the need for Russia to make a decision on an unconditional 30-day ceasefire by the end of Monday.
According to Stefan Cornelius, if Moscow does not meet this demand by the deadline, “preparations will begin” for new sanctions against Russia.
Zelensky awaits meeting with Putin in Turkey
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, May 15, for peace negotiations.
He also confirmed his personal attendance at these talks and Ukraine's readiness for dialogue in any format.
U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg stated that a ceasefire must come first, followed by negotiations.
President Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine is ready to meet with Russian representatives on the condition of a ceasefire starting Monday, May 12.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry responded differently, suggesting that negotiations should take place first.
Turkey has already expressed its willingness to serve as a venue for direct talks between the parties.
