New Bill Proposed for Ukraine Support

A new bill is being discussed in the US Congress that seeks to bolster support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russia, as well as to impose strict sanctions on Moscow.

Details: Congressman Greg Mix, a leading Democrat, has introduced legislation aimed at providing multifaceted assistance to Ukraine, covering security funding and post-war recovery along with increased sanctions against Russia.

The first section of the bill reaffirms support for Ukraine and NATO, proposing the establishment of a special coordinator for Ukraine's recovery. The second part focuses on security assistance, including direct loans and military funding. The third section outlines stringent sanctions and export controls targeting Russian banks, the energy sector, and government officials.

According to informed sources, this is another attempt to pressure President Donald Trump’s administration to take a clearer stance in favor of Kyiv.

Quote: "Such actions in Congress reflect growing concerns among lawmakers from both parties regarding Ukraine's fate, especially as Republican President Donald Trump has adopted a more conciliatory approach toward Moscow since the start of his second term on January 20."

Details: According to aides who worked on the bill, even if it does not receive full support from the House of Representatives, certain provisions may be included in a broader package of measures regarding Ukraine.

"This bill will definitely be part of a larger legislative discussion," noted one of the co-authors.

Quote: "Despite bipartisan support for Ukraine over the past three years of full-scale war, more and more of Trump’s allies among Republicans are expressing a more cautious position on assisting Kyiv since their party gained control of the House of Representatives, and from January 2025, also the White House and Senate."

Background: 

• In early April, a bill was introduced in the US Senate aimed at new sanctions against Russia for its refusal to adhere to a peace agreement, including a 500% tariff on goods from countries purchasing Russian oil and gas.
• On April 14, President Donald Trump attributed responsibility for the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine not only to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin but also to his predecessor Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
• Commenting on Zelensky's proposal to purchase American Patriot missile systems for the protection of Ukrainian airspace, Trump stated, "You can't start a war against someone who is 20 times stronger than you and then expect people to give you missiles."
