Taiwanese Retail Investors Set Records in US Asset Purchases

Last year, retail investors in Taiwan made unprecedented investments in US assets as households look beyond traditional insurance products for higher returns.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Taiwanese investors purchased approximately NT$105.5 billion (US$3.2 billion) in US stocks, exchange-traded funds, and bonds in 2024, marking an all-time high as per the Taiwan Securities Association.
Inflows into three major US assets from Taiwan also reached record levels last year.
This shift towards foreign investments is also seen in other parts of Asia. In Japan, the demand for foreign stocks from retail investors is putting pressure on the yen, adding to the downward risks caused by Donald Trump's tariffs and the significant gap in interest rates with the US.
