This morning, Ukraine faced attacks that damaged several electric substations critical for nuclear safety. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is currently without external power supply.
The IAEA reported this on its social media page X.
"IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that several electric substations crucial for nuclear safety were affected due to military actions that occurred this morning. The Chernobyl NPP lost its external power supply, and transmission lines connecting other nuclear power plants were also damaged," the statement said.
Grossi added that the IAEA is "closely monitoring the situation to assess the impact on nuclear safety."
Earlier, Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, informed Grossi about the preparations for another massive attack by Russian forces on energy infrastructure, which could target facilities and networks servicing nuclear stations.
