Light of Hope: The Bethlehem Peace Flame in Ukraine

In the lead-up to Christmas, Ukrainians come together, spreading warmth and hope by passing on a symbol of light that unites hearts across the country.

In Ukraine, the scout tradition continues: for nearly 40 years, scouts have been distributing the Bethlehem peace flame, passing it from community to community. This year, the flame has arrived in Kyiv and will begin its journey through cities and villages across Ukraine.

The flame will travel by trains of Ukrzaliznytsia — for the fifth time, railway workers are joining this initiative, helping to deliver the symbol of light to numerous settlements.

“Thanks to the railway routes, the flame from the Holy City quickly and safely reaches even the most remote corners of Ukraine. Traditional first meetings occur at train stations: here, scouts bring lanterns, which are then passed to passengers and local communities, and from here the flame sets off again — as a sign of peace, faith, and support,” the message states.

Every year, the Bethlehem flame becomes a symbol of unity for Ukrainians. Especially now, in the face of new challenges, it serves as a reminder of the power of light that overcomes darkness.
