Population Estimation in Ukraine by 2025
The State Statistics Service of Ukraine aims to conduct an experimental assessment of the population by the end of 2025.
This was announced by the head of the service, Arsen Makarchuk, during the conference "EU Enlargement: The Importance of Reliable Statistics."
Implementing new technologies and digitizing the statistical process are becoming key aspects of the service's transformation. The State Statistics Service is preparing a new statistics portal utilizing artificial intelligence solutions and plans to move towards digital household surveys.
Additionally, an experimental population estimation is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
Another important direction of the service's work is strengthening institutional capacity, particularly in restoring statistical production.
Makarchuk also reminded participants that due to legislative changes, business reporting in Ukraine will resume from July 2025, which had been suspended due to the war. The State Statistics Service plans to fill the gaps in statistical data by mid-2026.
Furthermore, Ukrainian statistics are gradually integrating into the European statistical system, harmonizing methodologies and adapting legislation according to European standards.
According to the United Nations Population Fund, since the beginning of the war, Ukraine's population has decreased by 10 million people, approximately 25%, due to refugee outflows, declining birth rates, and increased mortality from the war.
