Danish Presidency: New Opportunities for Ukraine
This past weekend, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark hosted a special event in the temporary urban space TORV at Kontraktova Square in Kyiv. This location was chosen intentionally, as it was designed by Danish architect Mikael Colville-Andersen, who is actively working in Ukraine. The event featured speeches from Ukrainian officials and diplomats, with Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis expressing gratitude to Poland for its support of Ukraine during these challenging times when the EU remains a cornerstone of Ukraine's security and economic stability.
The Deputy Minister thanked Danish Ambassador Ole Egberg Mikkelsen for prioritizing the pursuit of a just peace in Ukraine and the future enlargement of the EU, particularly through the tandem of Ukraine and Moldova. Perebyinis expressed hope that under the Danish presidency, Ukraine's EU accession process would reach its final stage, as the country has completed its homework. The temporary chargé d'affaires of Poland in Ukraine, Piotr Lukasiewicz, emphasized that Poland would continue to support Ukraine on its European path.
Denmark will hold the EU Council presidency in the second half of 2025, taking over from Poland. Ambassador Mikkelsen underscored the importance of forming a strong and decisive EU that takes responsibility for its own security. He highlighted that the Danish presidency will focus on priorities related to security and the competitiveness of Europe.
In an interview, the ambassador mentioned that European support for Ukraine is more crucial than ever. He shared his experiences during air raid alerts in Kyiv, noting that the situation in frontline cities like Chernihiv and Sumy is much worse.
Denmark continues to implement humanitarian projects in Ukraine, including the reconstruction of Mykolaiv region. Recently, the city received new trolleybuses funded by Denmark. During the event at Kontraktova Square, the premiere of the "March of European Solidarity," composed by Danish composer Morten Jessen, took place and will soon be performed in other European cities.
