Maksym, a graduate of Kharkiv National Air Force University, along with fellow pilots like Andriy Pilyshchykov and Oleksiy Mesi, became part of wartime legend.
Lieutenant Colonel Ustymenko demonstrated bravery as a defender, shooting down enemy aircraft in the early days of the war.
He destroyed the first two cruise missiles over Obukhiv, showcasing high professionalism.
Transitioning to F-16, Maksym quickly adapted to new technology, impressing his peers.
Flying various types of aircraft, he gained invaluable experience that, according to the military, is unmatched by countries that have long operated these planes.
Sadly, on June 29, during an enemy airstrike, Maksym perished after destroying 7 enemy targets.
Sacrificing his life, he ensured safety for civilians, failing to eject in time.
Posthumously, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. He is survived by his parents, brother, wife, and young son.
