Commemoration of Victims of Russian Attacks
The Ukrainian community gathered with black ribbons on their flags to honor the memory of victims of recent Russian attacks on Kyiv and to shed light on the refugee crisis caused by Russian aggression.
The Illinois branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) participated in observances for World Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20.

How Ukrainians in Chicago honored the victims of the attacks on Kyiv
“We came with black ribbons on our Ukrainian flags as a sign of mourning for the victims of Russian terror during the night in Kyiv,” − noted UCCA Illinois in a comment about their symbolic gesture.
During the event, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized that Chicago is a city that welcomes all refugees. He particularly mentioned Ukrainians seeking shelter from war and destruction, as their cities turn to ashes due to Russian aggression.
“The crowd, composed of representatives from ethnic communities worldwide, applauded in genuine support of the Ukrainian people. There were many journalists present from all major news channels,” − described the reactions of those in attendance by UCCA Illinois.
The community stated they came to the event to “draw attention to Ukraine and declare that we exist, and that Ukrainians have a voice in Chicago and in American society.”
“Let us not forget to remind everyone that Russia is a terrorist state that kills, displaces millions from their homes, and provokes a global refugee crisis,” − activists emphasized.
The organization sincerely thanked all participants of the event who contributed to the commemoration. “Deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives to Russian terror in Kyiv and across Ukraine. We remember that the struggle for survival and for Ukraine's place in the world continues,” − concluded the organization.
