Children's Artistic Perspectives on Journalism in Ukraine
Children of journalists have created postcards depicting their parents' working moments, — a presentation of young artists' works was held at the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine for the professional holiday of media workers.
The showcase of the postcard series "I am from a Journalists' Family" attracted a large audience. The stories behind the drawings created by children and grandchildren of Ukrainian journalists touched on deeper themes.
What are the experiences of media families during military times? How do children react to their parents' emotional fluctuations? How are they taught the significance of journalism in wartime?
The postcards were based on drawings selected from the work of over 100 children from across Ukraine. Last year, these works were exhibited at a show organized by the NUJU.
The first secretary of the NUJU, Lina Kush, addressed her colleagues and reminded them that the meeting in Kyiv was made possible because the military defends our land.
"Since 2022, 125 Ukrainian media professionals have lost their lives while fulfilling their professional duties or defending us on the battlefield. Our work is not confined to 8 hours; it encompasses our entire lives. As NUJU, we support journalists and recognize that their children are a crucial part of the moral support we provide. Today, we invite you to see the profession of journalism through the eyes of children who observe their parents," — noted Lina Kush.
She held postcards in her hands, and for everyone present, they were displayed on screens. Young artists sat alongside their journalist parents at the tables.
Most of the discussions about their work were led by adults. The young creators felt shy in public.
However, the postcards, with their sincerity, vibrant colors, and precise narratives, truly inspire and captivate.
"Look at how we appear in their eyes!" — media professionals commented with interest and pride. It turned out that even the youngest children have a clear understanding of who is who in this adult world. They depict the occupiers as toothless swamp snakes, expressing disdain for the terrorists who disregard human life.
The postcards feature interviews with heroes from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, press conferences, and moments of material preparation when the work seems stagnant. Children observe everything!
