New York's Cold Snap: The Tragic Toll of Extreme Weather

The mayor of New York, Zoran Mamdani, has announced that at least 18 individuals have lost their lives due to the extreme cold temperatures that gripped the city in January. This information was reported by BBC.
"According to the mayor of New York, 18 people have died during the severe cold spell," the report states.
Throughout the month, the city experienced 13 consecutive days where temperatures did not rise above zero degrees Celsius, marking one of the longest periods of sub-zero weather the city has seen in six decades.
Although temperatures are expected to rise this week, they remain below average, and Mamdani urged New Yorkers to «stay safe, remain indoors, and continue looking out for one another».
The mayor added that since January 19, when an emergency was declared under the «blue» code, easing shelter admission rules for the homeless, around 1400 individuals have been accommodated in city shelters.
An additional 64 hotel rooms were added to the shelters, and at least 150 outreach workers are currently active on the streets, as indicated by Mamdani.
On January 27, Mamdani reported that at least 10 deceased individuals were found on the streets, while circumstances surrounding other deaths remain unclear.
From December 20, 2025, to January 18, 2026, 1103 Ukrainians sought emergency medical assistance for frostbite and hypothermia, with 1016 of them hospitalized.
