Arrest of Ukrainian Citizen for Critical Infrastructure Violation in Sopot
The Sopot Prosecutor's Office in northern Poland has launched an investigation into an attack on critical infrastructure – the water supply system, involving a 36-year-old Ukrainian citizen Igor G.
He has been detained for three months and faces up to eight years in prison, as reported by Ukrinform referencing Polsat News.
The arrest occurred on July 21. He is accused of entering the deep-water well of the Sopot water supply system located within the Tri-City Landscape Park (Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot) and damaging the water supply equipment.
According to prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński from the Gdańsk District Prosecutor's Office, Igor G. has been charged with three offenses: destruction of elements of the water supply network in Sopot, damage to five electrical cabinets, and illegal appropriation of a document belonging to the victim.
The Ukrainian citizen partially admitted his guilt, particularly in destroying the power cable of the water supply electrical cabinet and three electrical cabinets.
The court has ordered him to be held in custody for three months.
Meanwhile, the local sanitary and epidemiological station examined water samples from the Sopot water station and confirmed that the water is safe for consumption.
The charges against Igor G. include assault on infrastructure (punishable by imprisonment from six months to eight years), destruction of property (punishable by imprisonment from three months to five years), and use of another person's document (fine, restriction of liberty, or imprisonment for up to two years).
According to the prosecution, the destruction of water supply infrastructure occurred on July 15.
As reported by the publication Rzeczpospolita, Igor G. may have attempted to enter another reservoir a week earlier but was scared off by a passerby. The newspaper also notes that the case is being investigated by the Polish Internal Security Agency.
