Restoring Memory: Exhumation Efforts in Lviv
In Lviv, at the location of a former cemetery in the Zboisha area, a search and exhumation initiative has begun to reinter the remains of Polish army soldiers.
This information was reported on the website of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.
It is noted that these soldiers perished in 1939 during the defense of Lviv against the German army, representing various nationalities.
The efforts are part of a bilateral initiative aimed at a joint reflection on historical events.
"The memory of the victims of World War II is not just about the past; it reflects our current values: dignity, mutual respect, and the ability to engage in dialogue. Ukrainian-Polish cooperation exemplifies how joint efforts assist both nations in restoring historical memory and justice," stated Deputy Minister of Culture Andriy Nadzhios.
According to Yevhen Boyko, head of the executive committee of the Lviv City Council, the cemetery existed until the 1960s and was officially closed in 1987. In the 1990s, a symbolic wooden cross was erected at the site, inscribed in Polish: "To the soldiers of the Polish army who fell in defense of the Motherland in September 1939."
Exhumation efforts are expected to last until August 30.
