Launch of K4 Initiative for Military Innovations
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is launching a new initiative called K4 Startup Studio aimed at supporting military startups focused on artificial intelligence. The primary goal is to create technologies that will provide an advantage on the battlefield. This initiative is being implemented with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Defense and the Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO).
K4 represents a new approach to collaboration between the state and the private sector: the program brings together developers, military experts, and leading mentors.
The Ministry of Defense has identified 4 key challenges that directly address the urgent needs of the military. Teams can submit their solutions within these areas as well as propose their own ideas for implementing AI in defense. A full list of challenges is available on the website: k4.mod.gov.ua.
The selection of program participants will occur in several stages. Up to 10 teams will be chosen, of which 4 will receive grants of $250,000 for each technological solution. Teams will undergo evaluation twice by a specially formed Grant Committee, which will include military experts and users of new technologies.
Each team will first undergo a 4-month intensive development program: mentorship from leading Ukrainian and international experts, combat testing of their solutions, and feedback directly from military personnel. After that, they will receive 6 months of individual support, culminating in attracting investments or signing a government contract.
The K4 Startup Studio model is based on best practices from accelerators. The main advantage for startups is direct access to end users and the capability to implement their solutions into real defense systems. For investors, it offers quick access to technologies tested in combat conditions.

K4 is a program for those ready to turn their code into weapons in the hands of our defenders,» said Kateryna Chernohorenko, Deputy Minister of Defense for Digital Development.
Applications are accepted until August 15, 2025, at k4.mod.gov.ua.
