Details: On the official page of the Pope in X, he published a statement in Ukrainian.
"I want to express my solidarity with the suffering Ukraine, especially with those mourning their loved ones. I share your pain for the captives and victims of this senseless war," – he stated.
President Zelensky reacted to his words, thanking the Pope for "constant prayers and compassion for Ukraine and our people."
"Together we must stop this arbitrary Russian aggression and protect innocent lives. A just peace is necessary. We would also be deeply grateful for your help in returning all our people – adults and children – who are being held in Russian captivity against their will," – wrote Zelensky.
It is worth noting that during the first conversation with the Russian ruler in early June, Pope Leo XIV urged him to "make a gesture for peace."
Pope Leo XIV also proposed the Vatican as a venue for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, an idea supported by Kyiv and European nations, but rejected by Moscow.
