Crimean Tatar Flag Day: A Symbol of Unity and Struggle
On June 26, Ukraine celebrates Crimean Tatar Flag Day, which symbolizes the struggle of the Crimean Tatars for their identity.
This unofficial holiday, established in 2010, signifies the unity of the Crimean Tatar people and their fight for self-determination, as reported by Ukrinform.
The Crimean Tatar flag, featuring a blue background with a golden tamga in the corner, is a significant emblem for the nation. The blue color represents peace and a clear sky, while the single color background symbolizes the unity of the people, according to the Institute of National Memory.
The Crimean Tatars are the largest indigenous community in Crimea, formed within the current borders of Ukraine, lacking statehood beyond them.
The loss of statehood for the Crimean Tatars occurred in 1783 when the Crimean Khanate was annexed by the Russian Empire.
The national revival of the Crimean Tatar people began after the February Revolution of 1917, when national movements in Crimea intensified under the banner of democracy.
During the first Kurultai of the Crimean Tatars in December 1917, the blue flag was raised, although its status was not formally established.
In 1919, the Crimean Tatar Parliamentary Bureau approved a new provision that recognized the national emblem and flag in their modern form.
After the establishment of the communist regime in Crimea, the Crimean Tatar flag was no longer used at public events.
The second Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people in 1991 restored the blue flag as the national flag, with proportions of 1:2.
Today, this flag symbolizes the struggle for the rights of the indigenous people of Crimea and the liberation of Crimea from occupation.
Refat Chubarov, head of the Mejlis, announced that this year’s events celebrating Crimean Tatar Flag Day will take place in Kyiv and abroad.
In Kyiv on June 26, ceremonial flag-raising events will occur at several locations. Additionally, similar events will take place in regional centers with the participation of both Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar communities.
In the evening, concerts and festive activities for children will be held at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko film studio. Chubarov invited everyone interested to attend these events.
