Revolutionizing Naval Warfare: GUR's Latest Drone Technology
On Wednesday, May 14, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine showcased its latest naval drones for the first time, which have already proven their effectiveness by destroying numerous Russian warships, aircraft, and helicopters, reports a journalist from Kyiv Post who attended the event at a secret location in the capital.
The Magura naval drones represent cutting-edge technological weaponry that has allowed the special forces of GUR Group 13 to turn the tide in the Black Sea in favor of Ukraine.
Also present at the secret presentation was General-Lieutenant Kyrylo Budanov, the head of GUR.
This Ukrainian intelligence agency publicly introduced a series of strike naval drones known as Magura:
- the renowned Magura V5 ship killer, the primary naval drone of Ukraine in combat against the Russian fleet, capable of carrying up to 320 kg of payload and equipped with a machine gun module.
- the multifunctional platform Magura V6P, with a range of up to 540 nautical miles.
- the missile-carrying drone Magura V7, which made history by destroying an enemy combat aircraft for the first time, capable of carrying up to 650 kg of payload and with a range of up to 800 nautical miles.
- the Magura V7 model, fitted with a combat machine gun module.
The Magura drones are a revolutionary technological weapon that has strategically altered the situation in the Black Sea to Ukraine's advantage.
The operators present at the event promised that this is just the beginning for the Russian fleet, emphasizing that the future of warfare lies in advanced technologies.
“We can confidently say that GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Group 13, has pushed the Russian Black Sea Fleet back to their bases,” said the commander of Group 13 with the call sign “Thirteenth.”
“On December 31, 2024, I believe we witnessed a turning point in naval history — two Russian Mi-8 helicopters were destroyed, and one was damaged. Additionally, as you know, we destroyed two aircraft,” he added.
Over two years of operational use of various modifications of the Magura naval drone, Ukrainian military intelligence has destroyed or incapacitated 17 Russian maritime and aerial targets, including two Mi-8 helicopters, two Su-30 fighters, as well as large ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet — “Sergey Kotov,” “Ivanovets,” “Cesar Kunikov,” and others. The total losses inflicted on the enemy have been estimated at over $500 million.
The Russian fleet continues to illegally operate in Ukrainian waters, primarily in the area of temporarily occupied Crimea.
Ukrainian forces regularly strike military ships and bases of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, employing precision missiles, naval drones, and UAVs. These strikes have forced Russia to partially relocate some vessels from Crimea to Novorossiysk.
