Alarming Statistics on Emergency Situations in Ukraine

In Ukraine, an average of 240 fires are recorded daily, resulting in approximately four fatalities and five injuries.

This information was shared by Roman Tsyren, head of the Department of Emergency Situations Prevention at the State Emergency Service, during a briefing at the "Media Center Ukraine".

Tsyren noted that these figures represent an "alarming trend" when viewed annually.

"On average, around two thousand citizens die each year due to fires, and five thousand may sustain injuries," he stated.

The State Emergency Service urges Ukrainians to refrain from lighting bonfires in nature during the Easter celebrations.

"Our country's territory has been severely affected by explosive devices. Some areas have been liberated, but many explosive remnants are still found there.

Especially when forests and parks are being used, I do not recommend lighting fires, as there has been a significant increase in fires in ecosystems this year. A 68% rise in ecosystem fires has been recorded today," explained Roman Tsyren.

Losses from emergency situations also include fatalities and injuries from traffic accidents, according to Tsyren.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, nearly 26 thousand accidents with casualties occurred in 2024. Over 3,200 people died and more than 32 thousand were injured, which is a 5-9% increase compared to 2023.

As reported by Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, the first deputy head of the Patrol Police Department, the most common cause of accidents with casualties is speeding, accounting for nearly 39.4% of cases.

Other common causes of accidents included maneuvering violations, running traffic lights, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

"If we add to this the traffic accidents that claim six thousand of our citizens' lives, it results in tremendous losses that we are facing," summarized the head of the Department of Emergency Situations Prevention.

It is worth noting that only 55 Ukrainians lost their lives due to household fires in the first six days of 2025. Fires were caused by electrical short circuits, failure to follow safety rules when using heating devices, and careless behavior with fire, including smoking in bed while intoxicated.
