New Tactile Paths at Kyiv Metro
At the 'Olympiyska' metro station in Kyiv, work has commenced on the installation of special tactile paths, as reported by the municipal enterprise «Kyiv Metro».
Tactile navigation will be established throughout the station complex and in the underground passage. Specialists are conducting the work at night when there are no passengers.
The advantage of this technology is the rapid and practical application of tactile indicators without disturbing the existing granite surface. Unlike tactile tiles, cold plastic is more cost-effective while serving the same purpose - assisting visually impaired individuals in navigating safely.
Before starting the work, several stages of consultation and testing were held with representatives of organizations for people with disabilities. The tactile indicators were applied according to modern standards and were tested by visually impaired passengers, allowing for improvements based on their feedback.
Throughout the implementation of this project, from discussions to practical testing, there has been close cooperation with the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine and other NGOs.
Metro specialists consider all recommendations and comments concerning the sizes and quantities of tactile indicators.
Additionally, the metro provides an escort service for passengers with reduced mobility, which can be requested by calling (044) 238-55-11 at least one hour before the trip.
As a reminder, escalators at the 'Palace of Ukraine' metro station will be undergoing repairs by the end of the year.
