A New Era for Avant-Garde: Exhibitions at the Avant-Garde Museum
To celebrate the anniversary of the Avant-Garde Museum branch, two new exhibition projects were launched in collaboration with the Museum of the History of Kyiv as part of the Avant-Garde Kyiv Fest 2025. The exhibitions titled «Avant-Garde. History» and «Avant-Garde. Cultural League» are the first art exhibitions in the museum's new location on Lypka Street, 16.
The Avant-Garde Museum branch was officially established in November 2024, becoming the tenth branch of the Museum of the History of Kyiv. In May 2025, the Kyiv City Council approved the decision to allocate premises in a historical building on Lypka Street, recognized as an architectural landmark.
«Today, we are witnessing the realization of a grand and ambitious idea that was actively supported and developed by the previous director of the Museum of the History of Kyiv, Diana Popova. Despite the challenges of wartime, a new museum – the Avant-Garde Museum – has opened in Kyiv. This became possible through the collaboration of artists, collectors, scholars, cultural actors, city authorities, and partners. Over the past year, we have progressed from the decision to establish the Avant-Garde Museum to the arrival of our first visitors. Our team has been working diligently to enrich the collection, which now includes nearly 300 works by representatives of various avant-garde movements. Citizens of Kyiv and guests can now explore two important artistic projects dedicated to the struggle for self-identity,» stated Victoria Mukha, the general director of the Museum of the History of Kyiv.
She emphasized that the exhibitions «Avant-Garde. History» and «Avant-Garde. Cultural League» are being held under one roof and showcase the most renowned names of Ukrainian avant-garde, while the museum team continues to explore the continuity of avant-garde ideas and defend cultural heritage from hybrid encroachments by the enemy.
«The extraordinary importance of these initiatives is evident today. Our mission is to actively reintegrate the names of Ukrainian avant-gardists into the modern cultural space. We strive to open pathways to high art for everyone. At the same time, it is important for us to present the results of our work on enriching the Avant-Garde Museum collection to the community and patrons appropriately. This is made possible through our shared care for our cultural heritage,» emphasized Sergey Anzhiyak, the director of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration.
The exhibition «Avant-Garde. History» features works by prominent artists such as Mykola Hlushchenko, Maria Kotlyarevska, Oksana Pavlenko, Vasyl Sedliar, Ivan Padalka, and many others.
The exhibition project «Avant-Garde. Cultural League» showcases the legacy of a Jewish cultural organization that operated in Ukraine from 1918 to 1924. The exhibition includes works by artists like Marc Chagall, Mane Katz, David Sterenberg, and others. The project is implemented in partnership with the Embassy of Israel in Ukraine.
Visitors can view the exhibition according to the museum's schedule: Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 19:00, closed on Monday and Tuesday.
Location: Avant-Garde Museum, Kyiv, Lypka Street 16, 1st floor.
