Record-Breaking Dictation Event with Sign Language in Ukraine
On October 27, Ukraine celebrated its language day by setting a national record for the most extensive dictation event, which included sign language interpretation for individuals with hearing impairments. A total of 195 participants from across the country took part, as reported by Lana Vietrova, the head of the National Register of Records.
The initiative was organized by the NGO “Feel,” which focuses on the rehabilitation and social integration of people with hearing disabilities. The event took place at the Kyiv College of Applied Sciences.
During the writing of the National Unity Radio Dictation, specialists provided sign language translation for participants who joined both offline and online.
“You should have seen how important it was for them to feel this unity! I firmly believe that sign language should become the second official language in a barrier-free society. This issue is particularly pressing now, as we increasingly encounter soldiers and veterans who have lost their hearing due to injuries. Mastery of sign language should be the norm for all of us if we aspire to a society built on understanding and empathy,” emphasized Lana Vietrova.
