Ukraine and Syria Reestablish Diplomatic Ties
On September 24, Ukraine and Syria signed a communiqué to restore diplomatic relations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called this a "significant step" and expressed readiness to assist the Syrian people on their path to stability. He announced this on his Telegram channel.
Zelensky declared the restoration of diplomatic ties with Syria.
"Today, Ukraine and Syria signed a communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations. We are pleased with this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on their journey to stability," Zelensky wrote.
It is reported that the signing occurred after talks between the Ukrainian president and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. During the meeting, the parties discussed potential areas for cooperation development as well as common security threats to both countries and the importance of countering them.
"We agreed to build relationships based on mutual respect and trust," said the Ukrainian president following the negotiations.
Syria has signed an $800 million agreement with a UAE company for the Tartus port. In the summer, the Syrian authorities entered into a contract with a company from the United Arab Emirates for an investment of $800 million to modernize the Tartus port. The General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports of Syria signed the agreement on July 13 with DP World from the UAE. The deal with DP World, a subsidiary of the investment firm Dubai World, includes developing a multipurpose terminal in Tartus on the Syrian coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
On January 6, it was reported that the last Russian submarines left the Mediterranean Sea after failures in Syria.
