Restoration of the LocoChoko Stadium in Kyiv: New Opportunities for Veterans and Youth
On September 10, the renovated "LocoChoco" stadium was officially opened in the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv. This facility is the first fully barrier-free sports space in Ukraine, accessible not only to local residents but also to military personnel and veterans.
The project was funded by the Howard Buffett Foundation, with coordination from the "Ukrzaliznytsia".
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPORTS
The stadium had been neglected for a long time but has now been revitalized to serve as an important center for adaptation through sports for veterans and youth.
"This stadium had been abandoned for many years. A nearby school told us that children had nowhere to play football. We shared this with Howard, and he supported our project. Now this space will help children and veterans adapt through sports," said Oleksandr Pertzovskyi, chairman of the board of "Ukrzaliznytsia".
According to him, around 12,000 railway workers are currently serving at the front, with 1,500 having returned home. Therefore, the creation of such spaces is essential not just for Kyiv residents but also for veterans.
The stadium features a modern football field, stands, a training complex, universal courts for pickleball, basketball, and volleyball, outdoor exercise equipment, and amenities.
VIEWS OF VETERANS AND ATHLETES
Among the first visitors was veteran Artem Kovalchuk, who defended Kyiv and fought in the eastern regions of Ukraine. He sustained serious injuries during combat.
"I've undergone many surgeries, but sports have given me a new life," Artem says.
He actively participates in sports competitions, having recently won second place in dragon boat racing.
Artem expresses gratitude for the new stadium but notes some shortcomings in the basketball court surface.
"This is an important step for us, as such spaces open new training and rehabilitation opportunities," he emphasizes.
Andriy, a member of the Ukrainian national wheelchair basketball team, also acknowledges the importance of new facilities but points out the quality of the surface.
"I will visit the stadium if there is an opportunity to play with the team," he states.
Originally from Donetsk, Andriy moved to Irpin after the war began and has been involved in sports since 2020, recently achieving second place in international competitions in Bulgaria.
The revitalization of "LocoChoco" has become a symbol of new life and opportunities for veterans, youth, and the entire community. "Ukrzaliznytsia" and its partners stress the importance of investing in barrier-free spaces even during wartime.
