Terror Attack in Kyiv: How a Tragedy Was Averted
A terror attack occurred in the Pechersk district of the capital, aimed at killing police officers. Thanks to the professional actions of law enforcement, a blast was successfully avoided. The perpetrator was arrested at his residence and was held in custody during the preliminary investigation.
On November 17, 2024, the Kyiv police received a report about a possible domestic violence incident. The 'victim' claimed via phone that her boyfriend had assaulted her, and out of fear, she locked herself in the bathroom, leaving the apartment door open. A police unit quickly responded to the call.
Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered a tripwire connected to an F-1 grenade. They immediately evacuated the premises, and seconds later, an explosion occurred. Thanks to their quick response, no one was injured.
It turned out that the apartment had been rented solely to set a trap. The call from a female voice to the '102' line was part of a criminal scheme devised by Russian special services to lure Ukrainian law enforcement into a trap.
Through operational measures, the Kyiv police, in collaboration with the National Police's Internal Security Department and the SBU, identified the suspect. He was a 43-year-old resident of Kyiv region, previously convicted of various crimes, who had been remotely recruited by enemy agents. He received detailed instructions from his handlers to rent an apartment, set explosives, and install cameras for online recording of the detonation.
The suspect was arrested at his place of residence, but he never received the promised 'reward' from Russian intelligence.
Recently, the Pechersk district court found him guilty of offenses under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act) and Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons).
The enemy agent was sentenced to nine years in prison.
